Narrative: Swimming Lesson

I walked along the tiles towards the pool. The sunlight shimmered on the surface of the silvery swimming pool, and the clock showed 12:30pm. I was going to learn to swim.

David was already in the pool with his Mum and sister. David had once said that swimming was easy, but now surrounded by floats, he looked helpless. He was wearing a rubber ring and two orange arm bands. He looked like the Michelin Man! Ha!

A burly looking lifeguard was perched on a platform, and a female swimming teacher was picking her way through the crowds towards me. She was wearing the same clothes as the big man, white t-shirt with a small red logo, blue shorts, and had a whistle hooked around her neck. She had long flowing blonde hair and pale blue eyes.

She reached me and began to describe how to enter the pool safely. She described it in steps, bit by bit.

"Walk over to the ladder, climb down it facing the ladder, then once fully in the water, let go."

I nervously walked over to the ladder and began to climb down. I was about three steps from the surface when the instructor told me I was doing it wrong.

"Try to avoid looking down and keep your body straighter... yes, that's it..."

I lowered myself step by step towards the water, when I felt my foot slip from the ladder... I fell into the ice cold water and began to sink...

The life-guard hurried over knelt down, and pulled me up with a firm grip.

"This is an armband" she said pulling out an exact replica of the object David had around his arms.

"Now you put them around your arms like this..." she said, slipping it onto her arm. "It is a float and helps to prevent you from sinking."

She removed it from her arm and gave it to me. Thanks I thought.

"Now try it out, get into the pool and kick your legs through the water and then that'll be the end of your first lesson."

Script: The Ghost

Narrator: Ben lay dreaming his house was on fire... suddenly there was a flash, pain, then blackness... Then a face mocking him... Ben woke up covered in sweat for the fourth time this week. The wind howled down the chimney, the rain thundered on the window pane, and something stirred in the garden. Suddenly the sound of breaking glass downstairs caught his attention...

(Ben goes to the top of the stairs)

Ben: Hello? Is anyone down there?

Silence.

Ben: Hello? ... Hello? ...

Silence.

Narrator: Ben froze as something came into view at the bottom of the stairs. Looking around, his dad's baseball bat stood out, propped against the linen basket...

(Ben edges towards it looking downstairs, then lunges for it, grabs it, and takes a lethal pose...)

Man: What are you planning on doing with that?

Ben: I'd kill you in a matter of minutes!

Man: I'd kill you in a matter of seconds!!!

Ben: Oh yeah? Come on then! Bring it!

(Man steps into the light)

Narrator: Horror crept to every corner of Ben's body in that instance, for the man at the bottom of the stairs, was the man who haunted him in his nightmares!!!

Ben: You!

Man: You!

Ben: You... I know you! You're in my dreams... my nightmares!

Man: Your flashbacks...

Ben: My what?!

Man: Your flashbacks. You see, when you were young, your house caught fire, your parents died, and I recovered your body...

Ben: My nightmares... they're not nightmares... they're memories?

Man: Just one thing I didn't mention. When I recovered your body, you weren't breathing!

Ben: You mean, I'm in a dream world, not reality?

Man: No Ben, I mean... this might come as a shock. Maybe we should sit down whilst I explain...

Ben: Ok.

Man: Ben, I am Professor David Arlston, alias Daniel Frost. I have studied the possibilities of LFD - life after death, and to my amazement the bodies genetic code and life existence rate shows that the body may leave the world but the soul will always live on, therefore you are a...

(Professor hesitates.)

Ben: Go on... (urging voice)

Man: Ben, you're a... ghost!

Ben: What!?

Man: I know, I know...

Ben: So basically, when you die, you don't die?

Man: Well, sort of...

Ben: So can I float through walls and stuff?

Man: It is a test to see how much you try....

Ben: Oh? Explain...

Man: You can float through walls if you try hard enough. But Ben, now I've told you, I must do a few... experiments on you to see how you've changed after death. You see, I too Ben, am a ghost. And there must be only one... The prophecy foretold the coming of you, and I must find a way to settle the soul of restless ghosts... so you are now Experiment 01...
