Monthly Musings: April 2025

An overview of opinions and observations for the month.

Since when did Tui close in Hanley!? "You can still pop in our Festival Park Branch" - not casually on my lunch break I can't, ya berk! 🥴 Had to go Eurochange in the Potteries to get my € instead! 😂

"This is the first meeting I've had where someone brought a tape-measure along..." 📏 Fucking tell me about it, Jane! I am bored to tears of hearing about the dimensions of this new fucking server now! 😭😂

Cheers to Lea for taking another job off my to-do list 🙏🏼 Looking forward to the Hope Wedding at Hotel Rudyard! 💒👰🏼🤵🏼

Arrived home to find an unexpected envelope on my doormat. Keoghs have mailed an update; the claims issue has been resolved and I am no longer required to attend court on the 14th. Interested to find out how much they've settled it for, because if that prick has been paid anything close to the £27k he was after, I'll be pissed! 🤨🤬

Munched a big fat Pasta Bake 🍝 watched Diary of a CEO with Scott Galloway 📺 played some Minecraft 🎮 and a bit of Pokemon Trading Card Game 🃏 then after being initially confused by the gangs of Vale fans roving my estate at almost 10pm, I popped for a nightcap down the Green Star with Dave, Steve, Ed & Dan 🍻

What's on the menu today then? Another meeting? Right, of course. Oh, then later on I've got a pre-meeting meeting, about another meeting that we need to meet up for. Then after the pre-meeting meeting is over, I've got the actual meeting that the pre-meeting was for. Finally I can write up the meeting minutes for the three meetings. Wonder when I'll have time to actually crack on with my outstanding workload? 🥴

Had a nice walk to Castle whilst chatting to my Mum on the phone 📞 Then partook in a PoGo Remote Raid with Moz and acquired a Tapu Lele 🎮 and enjoyed a simple Ham & Cheese baguette sitting in Queens Garden under the sunset 🥪🌇

02/04/2025 @21:15
Another good night of Rens at Bridge Street Ale House ✍🏼 Began with a 4.3% Hop Kettle North Wall (which I almost drank before we even really got started! 😂) then followed up with a 5% Burton Bridge Brewery Stairway to Citra after the intermission 🍻 Fraser kindly supplied some communal prawn crackers 😋 Tonight's readings were courtesy of Ed (Calladine), Barrie (Olive House), Fraser (Denneth), and Malcolm (Lena, Elena) 📚 I'll be missing next week as I'll be at a family meal for Moz's birthday but will excitedly return the following session! 🍛

Declined the very kind offer of a lift from Barrie and instead walked back to Smallthorne from Castle whilst playing PGTCP 🚶🏼‍♂️‍➡️🤳🏼 Since I'm not training for a Tough Mudder this year, I have to ensure I get enough steps in to maintain calorie deficit - I have to offset the exorbinant volumes of alcohol I consume and retain some modicum of a discernible waistline! 😂 On that note, I popped in the Green Star for last orders as I wandered past and had a quick chat with Dan about John Cooper Clarke 🍺😂

03/04/2025 @10:15
Woke up feeling fresh and raring to go this morning! Happy Birthday to my beautiful sister, Emma - have a great day! 🥳 Most of my day will be spent faffing and travelling; oh the logistical trauma of getting out of the country! 😂🍻

Tez picked me up around half midday, we drove to Burton's along with Moz, Bay & Lea. Had a couple drinks in Dave's backyard with all the lads who were coming (and 3x chickens), and then got a taxi to the airport. Went through all the standard stuff; check-in, security etc. Popped to the Giraffe World Kitchen for some food and a beer (or soft drink) whilst we waited for our flight to Amsterdam. Played 3-Card Brag on the flight with Moz and Tez. Once we had touched down at Schiphol and navigated the inbound protocols such as passport control and baggage claim, we caught a train to Amsterdam Centraal, directly from the airport. By the time we had walked down the main thoroughfare of Amsterdam and located our hotel, it was already past 9pm. We sorted out beds/unpacking out, freshened up, and headed back out around 10pm. Most had changed out of shorts; I'd changed into them. It was warm AF. Our first stop was St. James's Gate where we ate food, had a beer, and watched the Chelsea match. Then we had a wander around to Café Zwart where we all had a pint. Except for me - I had a stein, because I lacked the intellect to foresee I would end up pissed very quickly at that rate. After half-an-hour or so, we headed off to find the next haunt. At this point, James & Dave called it an early night; I say early - in all fairness it was past midnight. The rest of us posted up nearby at Café Belgique for half-an-hour; once again, I went overboard and polished off two Kasteel Rouge in quick succession. Bay tried to convince Tez that if you find a coin in your drink, you get a free round. At 1am-ish we'd found Stone's Café Bar & Nightclub where we would stay until nearly 3am. During that time I'd hammer in 4x pints of Brand 1340 Weizen, whilst Bay matched me drink for drink. There was some drunken idiot who fell down the stairs, tried to fight the doormen, and ended up asleep outside. I photobombed some womans Tik-Tok. Even had a few tokes at the bar from some randomer proving it's clearly been a long time since Covid concerned people. After we left Stone's, we wandered/staggered back through the Red Light District and arrived back at the hotel around half-3 in the morning, steaming.

I woke up around half-9, feeling like a bag of shit. There was sick all over the floor of our room. Bay had spent most of the night violently vomiting, whilst Moz had babysat him. After Tez had helped him clean up, we headed out the Euphemia around to the Albert Cuypstraat Market. Lea was proudly dressed in a Chelsea top. I treated myself to an Banana, Orange, and Papaya Smoothie which turned out to be fucking grim. I subsequently ditched it round the back of a stall. I bought a Spicy Korean Sandwich which Moz tried to hijack, then enjoyed a chocolate covered stroopwafel from Rudi's. We headed back to the hotel briefly, then went to locate a decent Canal Tour since the one's by the Heineken Experience didn't do any with beers included. We wandered for over an hour through Amsterdam, stopping briefly to buy some Cheesy Fries from Fabel Friet Oude Hoogstraat (along with a bloke who would be mint at playing limbo). The menu listed curry and then said 'curry ketchup' afterwards; I asked for this, had a load of confusion from the cashier, and ended up with both ketchup and curry on my fries. We found a decent Canal Tour that included unlimited beers and lasted an hour; the host was a guy called Tise, whereas the captain was Pascal. It was decent hearing about Amsterdam: why the buildings lean forward and have hoists and winches on them, the Dutch spice trade, why the houses are narrow and some have loads of windows, rents being the highest in the world, some houses costing €20-million on one specific stretch, houseboats costing €900k minimum, dutch directness, their shit government building, how they isolated their canals from the sea and replaced them with freshwater, their 3-day involvement in the war, the 7-bridges, they invented greenhouses, how one of the canals freezes over and is used for ice-skating, why their country colour is orange, about purple carrots... and no doubt plenty more random nuggets of info that I can't recall right now. After we disembarked the boat, we found ourselves in Bierproeflokaal in de Wildeman where I tried some Schlenkerla Smokebeer which was interesting. Moz had a stronger version that was insanely smokey. We made the call at this point to savour the nice weather and postpone our other planned activity until tomorrow. Moz headed off alone to go find a couple craft pubs he wanted to check out, meanwhile the rest of us headed off to Dam Square to enjoy a slice of pizza from Pizza Slices, a small seller who lacks creativity, located beside Café Zwart where we'd been last night. Some bloke off his tits in leather trousers was doing performative street art (or just having a mad trip) which made for an interesting photo-op. We then had a little wander and found Café Leentje, a quaint bar where we could sit outside with a beer for a while, before heading back to Euphemia to get ready for the evening around 18:30ish. Back at the hotel we played 3-Card Brag and drank spiced rum & coke (mostly spiced rum). Lea also enjoyed testing out his Stag outfit for later tonight; side profile for the win. Moz was eager for us to rejoin him as time was cracking on, so we reunited at Saint Morris Argentinian Restaurant where we enjoyed steak, beer, and shots of citronella. We left there around 11pm and headed to Café Old Sailor to shot jagermeister (cheers Dave!), drink pints, and enjoy the really scenic views. Midnight rolled by and we headed across to Excalibur Café where I had a bottle of Grolsch courtesy of Moz. Lea got changed into his Stag outfit and we wandered across to Durty Nellys Irish Pub where I sunk another couple pints of Amstel, one of which was bought for me by some random MILF from Manchester (who had cockblocked me from talking to her fit daughter). There were a group of Belgian girls in this venue too that followed us to Stone's Café Bar & Nightclub. Bay was convinced one of them was Anne Hegerty. We left around 03:15am, nipped Prada for a €5 lick, and headed back to the hotel around 4am.

Woke up at 10:15am to a delighted Bailie telling me I'd awoken hammered during the night and after failing to open the bathroom door, opted to just piss up it instead. He'd shepherded me into the bathroom mid-piss, and I'd subsequently fallen asleep on the toilet, much to his amusement. There was a pissy blanket in the cupboard to support the harrowing tale. And photos. He also later told us that he'd heard next door having sex; grim. Meanwhile, Tez had apparently pissed in the bin in his room. Feeling very fragile, we made our way to Aloha where we were booked in for Laser Tag at 11:15. We endured two rounds; my player name was Clutch in the first game and Ripcord in the second. It was really enjoyable despite feeling rough as a bears arsehole and the venue was really well themed. Moz was notably uber impressed with his accuracy. After we left Aloha, we were desperate for some food and regrettably arrived at La Gouch. The name should have been a warning in all fairness, but our stomach's overrode our logic. The guy who took our order didn't bother writing anything down; just tried to memorise orders for 7-guests. What a dumbass. The food was cold and dreadful; missing salmon, inconsistent tomatoes, AWOL fries, and bitterballen which according to Moz were nothing like what they should have been. At this point, James & Moz both opted to bow out and head back the hotel to catch-up on sleep. The rest of us caught a bus to Blast Galaxy, a retro games arcade in the arse-end of nowhere. The variety of the selection was incredible, despite the frustration of some of the cabinets being out-of-service; Gauntlet in particular broke Dave's heart. I enjoyed the driving games like Outrun and a shooting game amongst others. We also got to play Mario Kart together in a huge multiplayer room fitted with couches and 12-screens (via a projector). I came first in 4/5 races that I played, yet Bay insists we came joint top overall (as the sessions kept crashing meaning we had to keep setting up new lobbies). He is, of course, incorrect. It was around 6pm by the time we finally found our Uber that had been hiding and driving around like a mong. We got back to Euphemia after what felt like an eternity (including a tunnel that seemed a mile long) and got prepared for another night out - though this one would be certainly less hardcore that the previous! We headed to La Casa di Angelo Amsterdam, wearing matching Lea masks which continually threaten to fly away in the incessant wind. Our waiter joined in with the fun which made for amusing scenes when I kept randomly spotting Lea's face flitting around the room. After enjoying a Quattro Stagioni pizza and some homemade Tiramisu, we headed off to the next venue, glad to get away from the eyewatering stench that had manifested toward the end of our meal. We enjoyed a beer in The Three Sisters which reminded me in decor of The Crown Liquor Saloon in Belfast. After a riotious laugh and dance-off, we meandered down some dodgy dark alley's and through a construction site to find De Engelbewaarder, a quaint venue serving a wide selection of draughts. I nursed a nice Fruit Punch NEIPA, then a Bird of Prey IPA. Bay convinced patrons they had to pay him €1 to use the toilets, there was a raucous girl in a Brazil top who kept shouting "brah" in a mock English accent (and tried to steal a Lea mask), and Lea made friends with some drunk hobo bloke at the bar. After we left there, we headed to the Red Light Bar which was pretty shit to be honest (especially the music) and we ended up cramped up the back corner of the room. Calling it a day, we headed back to the hotel, taking a diversion through the Red Light District to find Turkish Kebab Sabba so we could get some greasy food. I ordered a Chicken Doner Box which came smothered in mayo, meaning I had to ditch half of it into a bin. The price was also a lot higher than advertised in their window - the pricks. I spent most of the walk home messaging Bug about Microsoft Excel/Google Sheets, and her login 2FA codes. We arrived back at Euphemia around 3am.

Alarm woke me up around 9am, but in all fairness, I'd been up on-and-off since 6am anyway as some dickhead in the adjoining room had been kicking the fuck out of his door. Hope he has chlamydia chilling on the end of his chopper, the whopper. We showered and packed our luggage, checked out the hotel (surprisingly getting back our deposits) and popped in Luuk's Coffee Vijzelgracht next door for a flat white. Bought souvenirs from Bestseller Vijzelgracht and some other store I popped in briefly as we passed. We'd intended nip in and sit down somewhere for breakfast but became conscious of the time, so opted instead to grab something light that we could eat whilst walking. I tried to get something from SANDWICHSHOP but they had no interest in serving me, so I went opposite to De Laatste Kruimel for a cappucino and a brownie instead. We headed to Amsterdam Centraal for the train, and I took a detour to Mama Duck Store (after Moz came to show me where it actually was). We caught the train around midday to the airport, then headed through to the lobby to wait for our flight. A few of the guys went for a Maccies, I just found a seat and relaxed. We flew back to Manchester, went through the whole shebang, and then discovered our taxi wasn't booked until 5pm - some confusion with the app and time difference it seemed. Oh well, we relaxed outside and had a laugh, discussing childhood foods and strange meal combinations. We headed back to Dave's (being followed by the same car all the way to pratically Dave's street) and ended the trip with a final photo of us all looking like we'd just returned from warzone.

Wandered up the garage and withdrew some cash, then swung around to Fortune House to buy a Chinese takeaway. Been fiending for salt & pepper chips, and chicken fried rice all afternoon! 🍗🍙🍟

06/04/2025 @22:35
Fingers crossed the SHEIN order that Bug has requested last minute arrives in time for Minecraft Movie next weekend! I'm not convinced, but she's adamant they get delivered earlier than the advertised 6-8 workdays!

07/04/2025 @09:15
Totally intended to have a lie-in but woke up early and then kept tossing and turning. Had a coffee and some toast, then caught up on life admin. Got a sore throat this morning for some reason too. Also, I'm up to 15st again lmao. I'll need to sort that back out in the coming months! ⚖️

07/04/2025 @18:20
Been cleaning the house ahead of tomorrows inspection from the new estate agent 🧼🫧🧹 Laundry, hoovering, polishing, rearranging furniture lol 🛋️ Even done the weeding in the front yard! 🌱

07/04/2025 @20:55
En route to AMC, I spy a mobile phone on the ground - pick it up and notice it also had bank cards etc in the case 📱💳 Don't trust anyone else to happen across it, so make it my problem to solve 🫡 and within half an hour it's been reunited with it's owner 💯

07/04/2025 @23:58
Back home, ate a chilli con carne for tea whilst watching YouTube, and done some more life admin ✅ Now it's time for another early night ahead of returning to work tomorrow ⏰

08/04/2025 @11:55
Checked my emails to confirm what time this house inspection is scheduled for today. Can't see a reply? Confused. Convinced it was agreed for 13:10. Check calls, texts, whatsapp etc. Cannot find confirmation anywhere. Rang the Estate Agent to clarify. Nope, nothing in the diary for today! Awesome. Glad they're organised! I proposed this time/date a week ago and not even had an acknowledgement it seems. Good job, guys! 🥴

08/04/2025 @16:46
Nose is like a fucking tap today. Either I've developed allergies... or I've caught the dreaded lurgy! 👃🏼💧

08/04/2025 @21:34
Really excited to see the Minecraft Movie in 3D on Saturday with Bug! 💛

08/04/2025 @23:12
Sorted through Amsterdam photos, filtered out the social media friendly ones, and uploaded them. It's always nice to re-experience the holiday as you flick through photos and are buoyed with visceral memories! 📸

09/04/2025 @10:01
Well, that confirms it's not allergies. Moz has dropped out of his own birthday celebrations for tonight because he's also currently battling through illness... 🤧🤒 Seems daft for me to attend and make everyone ill, so I'm likely to bow out gracefully too! 😷 Also, I just got asked if I've done a Covid test - wasn't even aware that was still a thing! 🧪

09/04/2025 @19:28
With the family meal cancelled, I flirted with the idea of attending Rens, reluctant to miss out unnecessarily... ✍🏼 However, I reneged, lest I potentially infect everyone with this darn illness! 🤧😷 Instead, I am settling for reading the manuscripts myself and imagining the accents, intonations, and gesticulating I've come to recognise from each reader! 📚 I'm even having a Toast Brewing New Dawn IPA to emulate the broader experience! 🍺😅

Finally had a response from the Estate Agent after 8-days of waiting. The email tells me that they're now unavailable until the 22nd... 🥴
