"A thousand thoughts flooded her mind. What was the long game here? Her ancestral home had been destroyed; the life she was accustomed too, eradicated. When they finally reached their destination, sheltered by the shrieking winds that never ceased, were they to simply wait for their inevitable death? These lands were unoccupied. They had been abandoned for the longest time, ever since back when King Valkye had sat upon the Midlight Throne some 300 years ago. There could be no reprieve in a land without food; a land stripped of life and left barren for centuries. Was the lineage of the Monarchy to die with her? To end in cowardice at the edge of the world? Her troublesome thoughts were cut short as Brevim's hushed voice cut sharply through the air. "There is someone, or something nearby... I can hear it..." The party stopped abruptly, panicked clanking in the darkness as the Throneguard drew their blades and surrounded their Queen. Silence; beside the pounding hum of blood coarsing through her eardrums, and the shallow breaths of her loyal escort. Their eyes had adjusted to the darkness somewhat, but the increasing sense of dread was clouding their vision. Shapes moved in the undergrowth. Or so it seemed. Perhaps they were hallucinations caused by the fear? Their breaths grew heavier, and shorter as their hearts raced. The low whistling of the wind was disorientating. The detritus cracking and shifting under anxious feet. The potent apprehension palatable. Something moved. Blades directed toward the shuffling in unison, but none advanced. Brevim reinforced his statement. "Something is here."" [Lightfade | XIV: Broken Bodies] The Aeska Saga: Lightfade, coming at some point in the future when I can be motivated to finish it... I'm 228 pages and 41,765 words in already - need break through this impasse I'm at!

Didn't expect to be writing this today, but here we are. Last night I lost another male family member to suicide. I haven't seen him properly in a couple years, but the last time I saw him all was well. Nobody expected it. Nobody saw it coming. Even those closest. Then he went home last night and ended it all permanently. Be kind. Be good to each other. Everyone has struggles you don't see. We have to be better. If you need a shoulder, ask. If you need an ear, tell someone. Don't suffer in silence. Suicide is the #1 killer of men under 50 years old, and men are 3x more likely to take their own lives than women. Don't wait for it to be someone you care about, or yourself. Speak to each other. Care for each other. Rest in peace x
