Crawled outta bed at almost 11am. Spoke to landlady and Bodge Job Billy is going sort the back gate in a couple weeks time 🥴 Had a shower then spent pretty much all afternoon playing Minecraft with Lysh on this new "Dwellers" mod pack she's bought 🥰🎮 then we've had a massive cuddle & tickle fight on the sofas during which I found out she has ticklish wrists??! And now she's upstairs getting prepped for going out later to celebrate Sammie, Keanu, & Lance's birthdays at Roberto's Pizza 🤗🍕🥂

My favourite person in the whole world! 💛 Told her she'd got to have scrambled egg on toast for tea but then secretly made her a pizza again because I knew that she really wanted it 🤗🍕

We are so privileged to exist in this day and age, with all these creature comforts, such abundance, and opportunity afforded to us. It would be a great tragedy to die without appreciating our lives every single day. Carpe diem.

What a comedy of errors! Fancied cracking this 2019 bottle of Clos Montblanc Xipella, so I peels off the foil to find a cork. Wait, do I even have a corkscrew? Can't see one in the drawer. Google, how can I open it? Use a screw and claw hammer. Lol, okay? No, that didn't work - just fucked the cork. Right, I know I have a corkscrew on a swiss army knife that Rob Lowe gave me when I was in Y6 at Mill Hill... so let's go find that out my memories box. Fuck sake, okay, right. Walking up my street and some young lady is struggling to open a can of de-icer. As I approach she really politely asks if I can try to get the lid off for her. Being the macho gentleman that I am, I of course agree to assist. She passes me the can, and I try to get the lid off and somehow manage to completely destroy it in the process 😳 the lady is reassuringly thanking me & saying it's fine, whilst I apologise profusely whilst handing her a can of de-icer and a handful of broken plastic shards 😭😂

Potentially driven more by my affinity for FFVII, I have thoroughly enjoyed this prequel and my foray into the life and affairs of Zack Fair. It built beautifully onto my existing understanding and intepretation of events in the wider universe of FFVII, and explored the pasts, motivations, and relationships of a whole panoply of support characters. Really explored the nuance of the bad guys with sincerity and authenticity. Genesis, Sephiroth, the Turks... there is so much more depth than was ever conveyed in the original 1997 FFVII.

Lovely night with Bug telling me all about London and she even bought me some souvenirs back! 🥹 She's ravenously eaten food that she actually likes since most of the meals she had in London were not to her liking... 🍟🍔 We've both played a bit of Minecraft 🎮 then she's danced around the living room to Tik-Tok whilst I was on Procreate doing a sketch of Aiden Clark off SBG 💃🎨🤡 we discovered that 'bbno$' made 'Lalala' as well as 'Two' 😲🎧 then we bowled around the offy at almost 10pm to grab snacks 🍫🍭 Lysh got her outfit complimented by a bloke who was buying a bottle of wine, who was the first person I've heard suffer with dyscalculia 🧮🍷 then after sugar crashing, Bug called it a day at the reasonable hour of 23:30 because she's shattered from such an exhausting week 😴 she was proper looking forward to sleeping in her huge comfy king size bed after what she described as a week of sleeping on "those blue gym mats with a white sheet over it"! 🛏️😬 glad to have her back home safe & sound, and that she's had a good time away! I love you all, most of y'all likely don't even realise how much you mean to me. Damn, it's a travesty. Some of you mean the world to me. Just wanted to be around people. Feel so fucking lonely lately, so isolated. Same four walls, same four faces. Just wanted to break the monotony. Ventured out of my comfort zone, only to end the night frustrated and sat alone because apparently I talk too much. Sorry Dave, I was just trying to be friendly and have a conversation in a pub. "Did you ever work in sales? I can tell. You don't shut up.". We'll try again another day, in another venue, because evidently this ain't the one.

I had been toying with the idea of joining RWG lately but was deflated with the prospect of having to pay ~£10 on taxi's each week. It just didn't seem financially viable. Then last night, under the spell of alcohol, it dawned on me: walk 💡 It's just shy of 4-miles away, and my standard walking pace is 3.6mph, so I could be back home about an hour after it ends tbf... 🤔💁🏼♂️

Been speaking with Ree about Buggo being unwell. She's perked up a bit now but has been struggling to eat all day & has a headache. Just into Vanaheim after playing in Jotunheim and Alfheim, and once again fascinated at the immersion and uniqueness of the world. Each realm feels fresh and exciting.

Seem to be spending all day on Minecraft again 🫡🎮 I always have a right good chat to Bug whilst we're gaming... yapa yapa yapa! 😂 She's just been telling me she is going Space Cadets all next week during half term because there'll be nobody at home to look after her during the day. Made me think about how simple and carefree my own childhood was. I said to Lysh that sometimes I feel guilty that I don't make plans for her all the time, or sign her up to loads of clubs/activities etc., but then I never really cared for that sort of stuff as a kid & don't feel like I missed out. But then I had lots of siblings to keep me company. She said that she's glad I don't overfill her schedule, because she needs time to decompress too & to be able spend time with her mates etc. 😮💨 I often worry that I'm failing as a parent, or that I'm not doing 'enough' where Lysh is concerned, but thankfully she never seems to see it that way! When I was being silly with her earlier and using her mannerisms and reciting memes, Tik-Toks, and other various brainrot phrases, she said to me: "you're my minion Dad - you're just me, in a different font" 🥰🥹

Someone who appreciates me & understands me. Someone who loves me deeply & thoroughly. Someone I can build a life with, make memories with, and grow old with. Someone who makes me feel like I'm enough. Something so simple, yet elusive. And then I had to laugh at the realisation that my own priority will always be Lysh anyway. That I should stop worrying about that stuff and just keep focusing on the best thing in my life, the ultimate embodiment of my unconditional love - my amazing daughter. Genuinely, I would choose her over anyone and anything. A world without her is a world I don't want to exist within. A life without her is a life without meaning, without purpose. "How do I effectively communicate to my daughter that she is just a normal kid and not a princess without hurting her feelings?"
When my daughter was 3, she also believed she was a Princess. Then she had a stint where she insisted on being called 'Kevin McCallister' and would re-enact Home Alone constantly. She would go ballistic if you called her anything different (like her actual name, lol). Then she was 'Ash Ketchum' (off Pokemon), and she'd call me 'Brock' and her Mum was 'Misty'. Then we had to call her 'Finn the Human' (off Adventure Time), whereas I was 'Jake the Dog' and her Mum was 'Lady Rainicorn'. She was into cosplay for a while (mainly Runa Yomozuki off Kakegurui/Nezuko off Demon Slayer). If I remind her of this 'anime phase', she cringes hard and tells me to shut up. She announced she was bisexual after seeing it on Roblox and started posting rainbow flags everywhere, despite not even understanding what it meant. It was around this time she was experimenting with pronouns and wanted to be referred to by 'they/them'. She grew out of that too. Then she had her frog phase where she was obsessed with 'cottagecore' and 'fairycore' and the family would call her 'Frog' and she would make videos pretending to fly around the house and garden. She had a couple months saying she was a therian and doing 'quadrobics' after seeing it on YouTube. She's currently identifying as pansexual. I'm just watching for how long this phase lasts before she loses interest. The point I'm getting at, is try not to worry about it. It's normal for kids to explore their identity, to try on different personas, and to find what makes them happy and comfortable. I'm sure the Princess phase will be a fond memory in a few years. I don't challenge how my kid identifies - I let her figure it out herself, with unconditional support, acceptance, and love. No matter what, she's my daughter & I will always be here for her. For when you hit a rut and need to get motivated; throw yourself into different environments to stimulate your creativity 🧠 Though fucking terrifying to hear Sanderson state he was unpublished and getting rejected whilst he already had 12 novels written! 🤯 Consistency is key; wish I had 8hrs a day to write like this guy! 😂 I'm definitely more of an Architect writer than a Discovery writer... really need to get back into my writing. I have stories I want to share with the world! ✍🏼

On this, I've been reading F*ck Whales by Maddox, which despite it's very unconventional approach to some unusual topics, actually makes some really valid points. One of them relates to this. In the chapter "Fuck Abstraction", he talks about how society has moved from holding people individually accountable, to abstract targets like "the war on drugs" and "rape culture" etc, things that can never actually be "won" or "overcome" as their is no actual tangible outcome, no metric to gauge success against. I agree with your point; we should stop generalising and return to holding individuals accountable for their actions. For example, no, it's not "rape culture's" fault that females are getting raped on college campuses, it's the rapists fault. By saying "rape culture", it almost absolves the rapist of blame - after all, it's not really their fault they raped someone, it could just as easily been anyone of us men committing the rape, because "rape culture" is so pervasive. How about we stop blaming "rape culture" which implies all men are potential rapists, and instead return to blaming the actual rapists.

[Lecture #2: Plot Part 1 — Brandon Sanderson on Writing Science Fiction and Fantasy]
Watching these lectures is really making me muse deeply over the outlining of my novel and prompting me to really consider what revisions are required in my next draft 🤔 A novel is comprised of plot, setting, and characters; obviously I have all these taken care of (to a degree). However, deep diving into plot structure raises a few observations. A typical plot begins with promises, is followed by progress, and ends with payoff. The promises should cover tone, character arcs, and story arcs. The progress should have appropriate pacing, moving the reader toward the delivery of the promises you made at the outset (without too many distractions/subplots). And the payoff can either deliver on those promises, or hit the reader with a plot twist instead. Common plot twists include overdelivering through a plot expansion, substituting in an alternate promise delivery, or breaking your promises intentionally. I am mindful that some of my character arcs may lack payoff, and some of my payoffs likely do not have sufficiently clear promises, meaning they'll likely fall flat. I do also think that I need to add a prologue as a cold open to ensure the tone is correctly promised from the beginning... 🤨🧐 I guess there is much work to be done... which also kinda makes me want to just put Lightfade aside and start on a new book entirely! 💀😂

Managed to get my Fitbit working again before work. Had a ballache trying to bluetooth pair it back to my phone when it's screen no longer works, but I managed. However, I get to work this morning and now notice that the battery has apparently dropped from 76% to 27% during my commute, so yeah. Perhaps not the success story I'd envisioned! 🔋

Been a great first attendance at Renegades ✍🏼 as I first entered the boozer, I bumped into Jase Gibbo from back at BK which was a real blast from the past! 🤯 Then after I had ordered a White Wolf Pale Ale and got situated in the back room with the rest of the group, I got chatting with Dave and Frazer who both seemed friendly and welcoming. The meeting itself was both interesting and insightful. Four of the group (Kim(?), Dave, Tim and Fraser) read out examples of their writing, and the rest of the group offered constructive feedback and critique. Some feedback was relatively obvious such as issues with consistency or proofreading faults (punctuation/grammar), whereas others included a deeper observation of historical accuracy, word choice, verbosity, POV's or correct tense. During the mid-session break I grabbed a pint of 'Touch Of Frost American Pale Ale' 🍺 and when it came time to depart for the day, I stuck around for a little while and had a chat with Duncan about the fantasy trilogy he's been working on 📚 Thoroughly enjoyed tonight and will certainly be back again next week! 😁

Had a lovely night babysitting Thomas with Lysh whilst Sammie & Lance went the theatre 🎭 He's so damn cute despite biting me, pulling my beard, and slobbering all over my leg! 😂 He is obsessed with Dog of Wisdom (which is mental) and he also loves Miss Rachel 📺😅 He's been an airplane, a rocketman, and a rapper 🚀 I've changed his nappy, fed him some milk, and got him to sleep (without even needing white noise which is his usual thing). Got home from work and worked on Lightfade for a bit ✍🏼 Watched a bit of YouTube and ate some beans on toast 📺🍞 then had a little overdue catch up with Moz about Pokemon and health 📱🩺 And now I'm waiting for Pete to get here for a brewski ☕ then the plan is to head down the Green Star for a brief beer - but genuinely, just a quick one! Nothing excessive, I've got stuff to do tomorrow & don't want to feel rough! 🍺

Had to spend part of my lunch break going to WH Smiths to get this old passport sent off. What kind of shithousery is this, right - so, I'm paying for First Class Signed For delivery, which obviously means the recipient has to sign to say they've received it, right? So, riddle me this. The staff member takes the letter off me, tries post it through the letterbox thing they have, and says: "It will have to go as a large letter because it doesn't fit through." I'm like, hold on a minute, it's not being posted through a letterbox anyway, it's being signed for? They reply "yeah, but it still has to be charged as a large letter..." 🙄 Absolute piss take tbh! 😂 Anyyyyway, we move. Now it's just squeaky bum time until the new one arrives, hopefully sooner rather than later! 🛂

Another good couple hours with the Renegades! ✍🏼 This week we had readings from Barry (Troy), Nic (Portrait), Malcolm (Lisbon), and Fraser (Denneth). I'm really enjoying these sessions and hearing critique and feedback that I can incorporate into my own work. It's also nice feeling part of something exclusive. The venue is great, I'd never been Bridge Street Ale House until last week, but I adore the whole aesthetic and vibe here. Really warm and homely yet also very rustic and indie. Also helps that Phil behind the bar is such a nice bloke too. They switch out the hand pump ales regularly, so this week I had a Wild Bill Hiccup and then a Little Critters 5.5% Chameleon IPA 🍺 Looking forward to next week already - think I'll be coming here for the foreseeable as a member of Rens! 🥰

Had a walk back from Castle to Hanley Tesco Extra to grab some shopping. I forgot how different the vibe is late at night in supermarkets. I remember when they used to be 24hr (pre-Covid) and I'd come in the early hours sometimes, and be the only person in the store. Wild. It's a stark enough contrast at 22:30 compared to when I typically go straight after work; so much calmer and relaxed thanks to less people and queues. The only drawback was having to go through self-checkout with a trolley since there were no cashiers on the tills this late at night! 🛒😅

Whilst there I bumped into Matty Downs which was ironic considering I'd just been messaging his sister Lorna when we were in Spoons! 😂 Then, I have utterly fucking decimated myself like usual... 💀😵 I have no self restraint at this place, whack it all on the plate and go back for seconds, and thirds too... 😂 we walked back home afterwards which will have helped it settle somewhat (and burned a tiny % of it back off) but make no mistake, definitely not in calorie deficit today! 🚶🏼♂️🤮
