If you do not wish to have a rushed vaccine (with no long term studies into it's safety or side-effects) injected into your arm, then you're a selfish idiot. At least that is the mantra in 2021.
Does it matter that you are usually pro-vaccines? Does it count for anything that you've had all the routine vaccinations up until now? Does anybody care if you are still fine with having other vaccines with proven safety profiles? In short, no. It doesn't. You need to have this vaccine now. No questions asked. Or you will be decried as a social outcast and wrested out of society like a leper.
But what about the fact there are no long term studies into the vaccines safety? Covidiot!
What about the potential for it causing ADE or ERD? Anti-vaxxer!
The risk of Covid isn't that high for me, and there seems to be an awful lot of Adverse Events being recorded for these vaccines, even some where people have died? Selfish conspiracy theorist!
It's exhausting. And the messaging and framing is clear; the Government, media, and big-Pharma are all intent on your conformity. They will keep shoving it in your face with incentives, peer pressure, societal disapproval and celebrity campaigns to make sure you go and get your vaccine like a good little compliant child. Do not question it. Just do it.
Few little bits worth noting.
SARS-CoV-2 belongs to the same viral subfamily as SARS-CoV and MERS-CoV. It has an ~80% sequence identity with SARS-CoV and a ~54% sequence identity with MERS-CoV. ADE and ERD were observed for both SARS-CoV and MERS-CoV, in vitro and in vivo.
What are those?
ADE (Antibody-Dependent Enhancement)
ADE refers to enhanced viral entry or replication in the presence of vaccine-induced antibody. This phenomenon can result in both increased virus infectivity and virulence. This may result in enhanced infection or an increase in severe infections in vaccinated individuals. ADE was observed in animal studies during the development of coronavirus vaccines; no incidents have been observed yet in the ongoing phase 3 of human trials.
In 2016, the Dengvaxia vaccine was given to 800,000 children in the Philippines to offer protection against Dengue Fever. Fourteen of the children died after catching Dengue Fever in the wild, because the vaccine had actually caused ADE which worsened the severity of the infection they caught. Approximately 10% of the recipients (80,000 children) are now at a higher risk from Dengue Fever than pre-vaccination. The WHO had previously stated in a 2016 research paper that: "vaccination may be ineffective or may theoretically even increase the future risk of hospitalised or severe dengue illness in those who are seronegative at the time of first vaccination regardless of age". Nevertheless, the vaccine was administered to children.
ERD (Enhanced Respiratory Disease)
ERD refers to an adverse event where an exacerbated course of respiratory disease occurs with higher incidence in the vaccinated population. ERD includes ADE, along with non-antibody-based mechanisms such as cytokine cascades and cell-mediated immunopathology. Non-neutralizing antibodies can form immune complexes with viral antigens inside airway tissues, resulting in the secretion of pro-inflammatory cytokines, immune cell recruitment and activation of the complement cascade within lung tissue. The ensuing inflammation can lead to airway obstruction and can cause ARDS. ERD caused by human vaccines will first be observed in larger phase III efficacy trials that have sufficient infection events for statistical comparisons between the immunized and placebo control study arms. The phase III trials are ongoing; the vaccines are approved under emergency authorisation only.
Perhaps those who are hesitant to rush for a vaccine aren't actually idiots. Or selfish. Perhaps they're just better informed, more aware of risks and less pressured by "nudges" and peer pressure. Maybe, they're just better educated or more critical thinkers.
"The group who is most likely to purposefully choose to not vaccinate are highly educated. In speaking with them, these are people who have read the primary literature themselves, and they’re correctly interpreting it, so it’s not a misunderstanding."
